Akroken Park and Square Lighting Design

Akroken is located in one of the many bends of the Nisheping River in Nisheping, Sweden. Akroken is a comfortable amusement park with many fun elements, such as sidewalks along the flowing water, play areas built for children, tall and spectacular trees, terraced seating areas, and even an adjacent city square.  In addition, the park has an interesting history where several medieval ruins, including shipbuilding structures, were discovered during the initial foundation construction. This provides inspiration for the design of some amusement elements in the park, such as rustic wooden houses and water pumps.

The lighting of such spaces has a certain responsibility: it must enhance the experience of the elements, but not be too dazzling. It should not obstruct the view of the venue.  Finally, it must create a safe atmosphere without glare and encourage visitors to play in the park.

This is achieved by carefully layering different types of lighting to selectively enhance certain functions and create an overall comfortable atmosphere.

The large trees dotted in the park are particularly prominent, and the custom designed pillars are integrated with tilting spotlights. These guardrails are high enough to avoid snow, but short enough not to obstruct the view. Finally, the spacious open-air square is equipped with column top lighting fixtures, which can evenly illuminate the square and visually resemble the nearby 'Stora Torget'. Pillar top spotlights are rarely used in parks to highlight certain areas, such as entrances and park swings.

All light sources are warm colors 2700K, and are obstructed from view and placed as low as possible below the line of sight to maintain human scale.

The corridor is covered with short columns, which are decorated with weather resistant steel to commemorate the rusting of all shipbuilding industries in the past, while also perfectly blending with the warm tones of the site.

The lighting in the amusement area and seats is integrated with the wood, although hidden from view, it provides a warm glow for the area.
